Mathurin Jacques Brisson
French zoologist and natural philosopher

Mathurin Jacques Brisson was a French zoologist and natural philosopher born in Fontenay-le-Comte, Vendée, in 1723. Employed by René Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur, he curated natural history collections and was influenced by Carl Linnaeus. His notable works include Le Règne animal (1756) and Ornithologie (1760), praised by Alfred Newton. Though Brisson’s Latin bird names didn't follow binomial nomenclature and aren’t recognized by the ICZN, his introduced genera names are accepted. He was an Academy of Sciences member and later became a physics professor at the College of Navarre. Brisson died near Versailles in 1806.
